Classic paintings, drawings and prints
In the exhibition catalogue ‘Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age’ (Hermitage Amsterdam, 2014-2016) you can read all about the extraordinary collection of portraits made espacially for the Dutch militia of the Golden Age.
In this catalogue Menno Balm has published a reconstruction of the great room of the ‘Voetboogdoelen’ , where some of the paintings in the exhibition were made for.
In het ‘Jaarboek Amstelodamum’ van 2014 wordt uitvoerig ingegaan op de Amsterdamse schutterstukken en waar deze hingen. De zaal van de Voetboogdoelen wordt in dit boek door Menno Balm in reconstructietekeningen in beeld gebracht.

Deze speciale uitgave van het genootschap Amstelodamum is geheel gewijd aan de Amsterdamse schuttersstukken.
De schutters, die zorgden voor de veiligheid van Amsterdam, lieten zich regelmatig portretteren, en niet door de minste schilders. Rembrandt van Rijn, Govert Flinck en Bartholomeus van der Helst waren vermaard om hun schuttersstukken. Dankzij hun werk kent iedereen kapitein Frans Banninck Cocq en zijn luitenant Willem van Ruytenburgh: ze staan prominent afgebeeld op de Nachtwacht van Rembrandt, met een deel van hun compagnie.
De kern van deze rijk geïllustreerde uitgave wordt gevormd door een lijst die Gerard Schaep – diplomaat en historicus, maar ook schutter – opstelde van alle 93 schuttersstukken. Hij noteerde wanneer een doek was gemaakt, wie erop waren afgebeeld, en waar en hoe het hing: ‘Op de grootte kamer boven de poort, het nieuwe stuck daer scepen Jan van der Poll, capitein ende sijn broeder Gijsbert van der Poll lutenant sijn, gescildeert van Jan Spilbergh anno 1650.’
Schaep noteerde ook alle doeken die niet bewaard zijn gebleven. Zijn lijst – in een geheel nieuwe transcriptie integraal opgenomen – geeft daarmee een compleet overzicht van alle schuttersstukken die tussen 1529 en 1656 zijn geschilderd. Na die tijd zijn er geen schuttersportretten meer gemaakt: de doelens verloren hun functie en gingen voornamelijk dienst doen als herbergen en logement, met ieder zo hun eigen kasteleins en ‘doelwijven’.
Rembrandt’s Late Pupils is the first book to present the late Rembrandt as teacher, his relationship with his pupils and the instruction that they received from him in the final period of his career, from around 1650 until his death in 1699. In art, the relationship between pupil and master has always been of crucial importance. This applies to the time of Rembrandt as much as in the art academies of today. These close interactions over many years played a major role in the production of art. They took place in the workshop and in the house of the master.
From 1650 to 1669 at least fourteen artists received instruction from Rembrandt, including Nicolaes Maes, Willem Drost, Abraham van Dijck and Arent de Gelder. A number of them were encouraged in this by Rembrandt’s former pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten.

Once in a while, a bankruptcy can be a blessing. Take the bankruptcy of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) in 1656 as a case in point. Thanks to the inventory that was drawn up on July 25 of that year, we have a complete list of his possessions. This list and Rembrandt’s House itself inspired Menno Balm to produce this richly illustrated book.
